This is the last week of Emerging Technologies 647e. It’s been an interesting experience to say the least.
The most memorable moment in the class for me was definitely our active participation in the TCC conference. I believe this was a great integration of current technology, Twitter and Slack specifically, and an opportunity for students to apply what they’ve learned during an online conference.
I wish we used the social media platforms a little bit more throughout the whole course in addition to the TCC Conference. Acknowledging emerging technologies like social media in a professional environment is one thing but to apply it and use it is another. It could make some people uncomfortable due to privacy so I would suggest having a disclaimer in the beginning of the course about the social media participation expectations AND have an in-class discussion or online discussion board about the perspectives, challenges, and solutions of and towards emerging technologies.
This suggestion stems from my biggest challenge in this class was the distance and disconnect between the students in the class. I feel like this is a challenge for a lot of online classes however, this one particularly, I felt an even greater disconnect because we would only meet every two weeks, the student’s had different interpretations and perspectives of what emerging technologies were, and then the student’s had total control of the assignments. I enjoyed the conversations and discussion however, I feel like this class needed more structure and directions in terms of topics, depth, and deliverables.
Regardless of the challenges, I still feel like I learned in this class. I was able to learn about using Twitter and start building a blog on WordPress. There were some topics I will want to explore further and also how it’s relevant and important in the growth of society and education. Thank you for the lovely semester!
